The Lizard YH
5th to 7th March 2004
I’ve just returned from a weekend staying at the Lizard hostel and was so impressed that I thought I’d give it a mention here. The hostel couldn’t be in a better position; the coast path is practically on the doorstep and hostellers are spoilt with a clear view out over the most southerly point in England.
The original owner, an artist by the name of Thomas Hart, obviously knew a good location when he saw one and decided to build his family home here back in the 1870s. By the 1920s the premises were being used as a hotel and it’s quite easy to imagine fashionable guests relaxing on the sunny terrace. The only drawback is the proximity to the Lizard lighthouse, which looms up just a few yards away. Apparently hotel owners braced themselves for a barrage of complaints whenever the fog descended. Luckily we were blessed with beautiful weather so earplugs were only needed for anti-snoring purposes.
The hostel was opened by the YHA in April 2003, so everything is still very shiny and new; cosy carpets, comfy sofas, trendy colour schemes and even ceiling spotlights. The local pub is within walking distance for an evening meal (unless like me you forget your torch) and has a good menu including several veggie edibles.
Walk-wise we took a left out of the garden gate and did a lovely 8 mile circular walk via the pretty fishing village of Cadgwith (a handy spot for lunch and a drink at the pub). We could equally have turned right and made our way to Kynance Cove. I didn’t get a chance to sample the famous local pasties but did enjoy a pint of milk from the local Jersey herd. All in all a perfect weekend and a well-deserved four star rating.
